Count Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828 - 1910), was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. Tolstoy’s short story The Candle is about peasants who want to kill their superintendent because he insists they plough a field on Easter Monday. One peasant makes the best of the situation by placing a candle on his plough while he sings hymns. A pacifist peasant manages to stop the murder, and the cruel superintendent repents and visits the village to reconcile with the people. However, he dies after falling off his horse. The theme examines the biblical concept of turning the other cheek, and trusting God to sort out injustice, or taking things into one’s own hands. 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Eliot. Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer and philosopher who primarily wrote novels and short stories. He was a master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy's literal interpretation of the teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance are represented in his short story "A Candle", which tells the story of a group of peasants suffering under a tyrannical overseer. His beatings are so severe as to be sometimes fatal and when he orders the serfs to plough the fields on Easter Sunday, a discussion begins as to whether they should assassinate the brutal steward. The peasants are divided on the subject. One group, led by Vasili are determined to murder the bully. Another group, swayed by Piotr, believe it is best to bear their sufferings rather than to risk their souls. But neither group can possibly foresee the strange and terrible events that occur when Easter Sunday arrives. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. A Little Hero , Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 104min

A Little Hero takes place during some summer days at a manor house outside of Moscow, where members of the Russian upper class enjoy themselves with lavish parties, scenic outings, and various carefree pursuits. The main character is an 11-year-old boy who becomes fascinated by and falls in love with the beautiful and melancholic Madame M, who is a grown-up, married woman. Through the boy's clear sight we gain an insight into what is going on behind the polished surface of the manor and its guests, including the unequal balance between the sexes and the grown-ups' condescending and thoughtless behavior toward the children. In addition, the story contains some very rich depictions of landscape and the natural surroundings and is first and foremost a beautiful representation of a boy's first meeting with erotic love. When Dostoyevsky was arrested in 1848 for revolutionary activity - because of his membership in the intellectual group the Petrashevsky Circle - he was sent to the well-defended Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, which housed the most dangerous convicts. He spent eight months there while awaiting his sentence. After three months he was allowed a candle in his cell, and he immediately got to work on writing a story, which became A Little Hero. The lovely little tale forms a sharp contrast to the grim circumstances under which it was written. 1. Language: English. Narrator: David Bateson. Digital Orthodoxy in the Post-Soviet World

This volume explores the relationship between new media and religion, focusing on the WWW’s impact on the Russian Orthodox Church. Eastern Christianity has travelled a long way through the centuries, amassing the intellectual riches of many generations of theologians and shaping the cultures as well as histories of many countries, Russia included, before the arrival of the digital era. New media pose questions that, when answered, fundamentally change various aspects of religious practice and thinking as well as challenge numerous traditional dogmata of Orthodox theology. For example, an Orthodox believer may now enter a virtual chapel, light a candle by drag-and-drop operations, send an online prayer request, or worship virtual icons and relics. In recent years, however, Church leaders and public figures have become increasingly skeptical about new media. The internet, some of them argue, breaches Russia’s ?spiritual sovereignty? and implants values and ideas alien to the Russian culture. This collection addresses such questions as: How is the Orthodox ecclesiology influenced by its new digital environment? What is the role of clerics in the Russian WWW? How is the specifically Orthodox notion of sobornost’ (catholicity) being transformed here? Can Orthodox activity in the internet be counted as authentic religious practice? How does the virtual religious life intersect with religious experience in the ?real? church?
