Bolshoi Confidential: Secrets of the Russian Ba...

On a freezing night in January 2013, an assailant hurled acid in the face of the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Filin. The crime, organised by a lead soloist, dragged one of Russia's most illustrious institutions into scandal. Under Vladimir Putin, the Bolshoi Theatre has been called on to preserve Russia's lengthy artistic legacy and to mirror its neo-imperial ambitions. As renowned musicologist Simon Morrison shows in his tour de force account, the attack and its torrid aftermath underscored the importance of the Bolshoi to the art of ballet, to Russia, and to the world. With exclusive access to state archives and private sources, Morrison sweeps us through the history of the ballet, tracing the political ties that bind the institution to the varying Russian regimes and detailing the birth of some of the best-loved ballets in the repertoire. From its disreputable beginnings in 1776, the Bolshoi became a point of pride for the tsarist empire after the defeat of Napoleon in 1812. After the revolution Moscow was transformed into a global capital; meetings of the Communist Party were hosted at the Bolshoi, and the Soviet Union was signed into existence on its stage. Recently, a £450 million restoration has returned the Bolshoi to its former glory, even as prized talent has departed. The theatre has been bombed, rigged with explosives and reinforced with cement. Its dancers have suffered unimaginable physical torment to climb the ranks. But, as Morrison reveals, the Bolshoi has transcended its own fraught history, surviving 250 years of artistic and political upheaval to define not only Russian culture but also ballet itself. 1. This programme records the meeting of two Russian musical giants, as Valéry Gergiev, the most charismatic and dynamic conductor of our day, rehearses, performs and discusses Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Innovative, inspiring and exhilarating, the Sacre du printemps is close to the maestro’s heart. Among a wide range of archive material used in the programme is a rare clip of Igor Stravinsky conducting the Sacre, as well as footage of him talking about his composition. This programme records the meeting of two Russian musical giants, as Valery Gergiev, the most charismatic and dynamic conductor of our day, rehearses, performs and discusses Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, a masterpiece of the twentieth-century. This visceral music is close to the maestro’s heart. He not only talks about its history and demonstrates what makes it such an innovative, inspiring and exhilarating composition, but also explains his special affi nity with this work from Stravinsky’s “Russian period”.The theme of the Sacre is the primitive peasants’ appeasement of the new year deity that presides over earthly fertility and man’s survival. Stravinsky’s reiterated rhythms, harsh, massive blocks of harmony and dour, menacing scraps of basic melodic material evoke the first spring thaw for primitive man. The piece was written as ballet music, commissioned by Diaghilev and choreographed by Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes. The première of the Sacre ballet caused such a scandal that 29th May 1913 has gone down as the most notorious night in dance history. This programme includes extracts from a 1970’s Joffrey Ballet production of the Sacre, which used Nijinsky’s choreography and reconstructions of the original set and costume designs.Among a wide range of archive material used in the programme is a rare clip of Igor Stravinsky conducting the Sacre, as well as footage of the composer talking about his composition and recalling his reaction to the audience’s loud disapproval of the piece at is première – “I said, ‘Go to Hell!’”

Early Life and Works of George Balanchine

After the chaos of the 1917 Revolution, the new Soviet Union saw a period of great creative energy in all the arts. A child of his times, the young ballet dancer George Balanchine began to experiment with new choreographic ideas and forms, transforming the art of dance. By expanding the vocabulary of classical ballet and altering movement dynamics, he set the direction that ballet was to take for the remainder of the 20th century. This study explores his earliest choreography and examines how he combined elements from the classical tradition of the Imperial Russian Ballet with the new movements in Constructivist sculpture and theater. He brought these innovations to Paris when Diaghilev hired him as choreographer for the Ballets Russes a few years later. There he polished his work through collaborations with musicians such as Stravinsky and visual artists such as Matisse. Early works Balanchine created in Russia are examined in context with his Ballets Russes ballets,to show how his transformation culminated in Apollo, his first Neo-classical work.
